Roots not brown. Rhizome short. Stems short to much elongated and slender, those of subsection Crumenata/Aporopsis often with lowermost internodes conspicuously swollen and leafless, entirely or only in upper part branched or not, usually not fleshy, many-leaved, often in upper part with scale-like leaves only. Leaves sheathing at the base, overlapping or not, glabrous, either thick coriaceous and dorsiventrally flattened (subsection Crumenata/Aporopsis), laterally flattened with sharp edges (subsection Aporum), or laterally flattened with rounded edges and thick coriaceous, very fleshy, often subterete (subsection Strongyle). Inflorescences very short small fascicles, usually 1-flowered, arising laterally from the slender part of stem, or, if this is present, only from the scale-leaved upper parts. Flowers very small to rather large, thin-textured or rather fleshy, lasting less than 1 day or when rather fleshy several days. Mentum well-developed, either or not tubular in apical part. Lip not mobile, apically on the column foot and often somewhatadnate to that. Rostellum usually with a soft but distinct viscidium.
