Family Orchidaceae Subfamily Epidendroideae Tribe Vandeae

Vandeae Lindl., ColL Bot., App. (1821). Type genus: Vanda R.Br.

Epiphytes, lithophytes, or rarely terrestrials, monopodial or sympodial, herbaceous. Stems 1- to many-leaved; in sympodial taxa stems in tufts or spaced on a rhizome, often swollen into hetero- or homoblastic pseudobulbs. Leaves usually distichous, rarely secund or quaquaversal, conduplicate, glabrous; leaf sheath present. lnflorescence lateral or terminal, racemose or paniculate, sometimes 1-flowered. Flowers resupinate or not, ephemeral to long-lasting, distichous, secund or quaquaversal. Sepals entire, free or rarely connate. Petals entire, free or rarely adnate to the sepals. Lip free, immobile, or hinged to the column or the column foot and mobile, entire or lobed, with or without keels and/or calli, with or without a spur. Column usually without stelidia; column foot present or absent; anther helmet-shaped, 2-or 4locular, pollinia 2 (sometimes porate or cleft), 4 (sometimes unequal-sized) or 8, hard-waxy, with or without caudicles; stipe present or not; viscidium present or rarely absent, sometimes of complex shape; stigma concave; rostellum short or beak-like elongated, entire or 2-or 3-dentate. Ovary and pedicel terete or 6-ribbed, glabrous or rarely pubescent, rarely winged. Fruit a capsule, subspherical to oblong to narrowly cylindric, 1-locular, smooth or 6-ribbed, rarely winged.
