Terrestrials, autotrophs or mycoheterotrophs, herbaceous. Tubers, tuberous rhizomes or coralloid stems subterranean; tubers spherical to ellipsoid, with several-nodes. Roots without a velamen. Leaf reduced, sheath-like and without chlorophyll, or leaf developed, solitary, plicate, not articulate, usually not simultaneous with the inflorescence, erect, or parallel to or appressed to the substrate, hairy or glabrous. Inflorescence terminal, erect, racemose; floral bracts persistent. Flowers spirally arranged on the rachis, short-lived, resupinate or not, subcampanulate, erect, spreading or pendent. Ovaryribbed. Sepals free, not spreading widely, linear-lanceolate. Petals free, similar to the sepals but smaller. Lip often free, more or less embracing the column, entire to 3-lobed, with a lamellate or hairy callus, rarely with a spur at the base. Column club-shaped; anther incumbent, 2-celled; pollinia 2, 2-locular, sectile, without caudicles or viscidia; stigma entire; rostellum flap-like.

Tribe Nervilieae contains 2 subtribes and is distributed in western Europe, the Old World tropics and the subtropics of Africa, Madagascar, Asia, Taiwan, Malesia, Australia to the southwest Pacific islands.
