Cryptostylidinae Schltr., Bot. Jahrb. Syst. 45 (1911) 381. Type genus: Cryptostylis R.Br.

Terrestrials, herbaceouss, glabrous. Roots long and fleshy; tubers absent. Leaf absent or 1 or more per shoot, convolute, longer than wide, erect, coriaceous; petiole present. Inflorescence racemose. Flowers not resupinate, dull-coloured. Sepals about similar to the petals. Lip immobile on the base of the column, often much larger than the tepals; blade glabrous or hirsute, with or without calli, without nectar. Column short, without free filament and style parts; column foot absent; pollinarium with 4 pollinia. Fruit a dehiscent capsule.

Subtribe Cryptostylidinae is distributed in Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Indochina, Taiwan, Malesia, southwest and East Australia,the Pacific Islands east to Samoa, Neaw Caledonia and New Zealand.
