Thelymitrinae Lindl., Gen. Sp. Orch. Pl. (1840) 442 (as Thelymitridae). Type: Thelymitra J. Forst. & G. Forst.

Synonyms:

Terrestrials, herbaceous, glabrous or hirsute. Tubers elongate, naked. Leaf solitary, rarely absent, sessile, cylindrical and terete or convolute, flat or channeled, sessile, erect, sometimes spirally twisted. lnflorescence racemose. Flowers resupinate, dull to brightly coloured. Sepals and petals rather subsimilar or different in shape. Lip immobile on the base of the column; not lobed or obscurely lobed, without calli or with a basal tuft of pseudo-anthers or with hair-like trichomes; nectar absent. Column with a column foot; pollinarium present; pollinia two or four. Fruit a dehiscent capsule.

Subtribe Thelymitrinae is distributed in Malesia, northern, southern and eastern Australia, New Caledonia, New Zealand,Auckland Island and Chatham Islands.
