Type: Brass 10259 (holo AMES!; iso L!).

Creeping rhizomatous herb. Rhizome 20 cm or more long, creeping, stem-like; roots borne at the nodes. Erect stems up to 8 cm apart on the rhizome, flexuous elongate, terete, 5—6 cm tall; shortly tomentose. Leaves up to 4, suberect, in two rows, articulate, linear-lanceolate, 6—28 by 0.6—1 cm; base narrowed in a 3—4 cm long petiole; apex acuminate; glabrous. Inflorescence basal, erect, glabrous; peduncle terete, 2 cm long, covered in basal third with tubular, acute sheathing bracts; rachis 8-12- flowered; floral bracts caducous. Flowers suberect, glabrous. Median sepal concave, oblong- elliptic, 0.7—0.75 by 0.4 cm; apex rounded. Lateral sepals obliquely elliptic, 0.75—0.8 by 0.45—0.5 cm; apex acute. Petals obliquely spatulate-elliptic, 0.7 by 0.4 cm; apex rounded. Lip adnate to the column, 3-lobed; lateral lobes oblong; midlobe ovate, 0.3 by 0.25 cm, with acute apex, its apical margins crenulate; in the mouth of the spur with a 2-ridged callus; spur almost parallel to the ovary, cylindrical, 0.5—0.55 cm long; rounded at the apex. Column slender, dilated somewhat near the apex, 0.35 cm long.

Flowers translucent white, with an orange spot on the lip.

Terrestrial in mossy forest in humus base of trunks and in moss hummocks. Altitude 2600 m.

Calanthe habbemensis resembles C. lancilabris Ormerod & P.J. Cribb in habit but has caducous bracts, a broader midlobe to the lip with a prominent bilobed basal callus and a somewhat conical spur.
