Agrostophyllum atrobrunneum Ormerod, Orchadian 16 (2011) 563, fig.

Type: L.J. Brass 12072 (holo AMES; iso BRI).

Epiphytic herb. Roots terete, pubescent, 0.05-0.1 cm. Rhizome terete, branching, appearing ascendant, to 13 cm long. Stems subterete, to 2.5 cm apart, laxly 4-7 leaved in upper half or near apex, rarely all over, 16.2-28.0 by 0.10-0.15 cm. Leaves thin, erect, linear, 3.5-7 by 0.15-0.25 cm; leaf sheaths 1.3-1.8 cm long, apically2 slender, thin stipule 0.1-0.2 cm long; apex bicuspidate with equally to unequally long lobes 1-3 mm long, median to 0.075 cm long mucronate. Inflorescence terminal, with a few sheaths and bracts, 1-2 flowered, to 2 by c. 0.3 cm. Pedicel and ovary subterete, c. 0.6 cm long. Median sepal oblong-lanceolate, 0.78 by 0.3 cm; apex acute; 4-nerved, one lateral nerve branched. Lateral sepals obliquely elliptic-lanceolate; apex acute; midrib dorsally to the apex carinate, 0.83 by 0.32 cm. Petals oblong ligulate, 0.72-0.73 by 0.195 cm; apex subacute; 3-nerved. Lip trilobed, 0.8 cm long; hypochile with broadly rounded lateral lobes, c. 0.2-0.21 by 0.2 cm; ligula subquadrate, with bidentate apex, papillose-pubescent; epichile broadly ovate-reniform; apex subacute, 0.58-0.6 by 0.69 cm. Column 0.375 cm long.

Leaf sheaths dark brown (fungus?), yellow-green on isotype. Flowers white, lip with a yellow spot at the base of the epichile.

Epiphyte low on trunks in mossy forest. Altitude 1800 m.

Malesia (New Guinea), endemic.

Indonesia (Papua Province, Sarmi Regency).

Cool growing epiphyte.

Agrostophyllum atrobrunneum is similar to A. uniflorum Schltr. but differs in having fewer (4- 7, rarely more) leaves per stem, leaf sheaths with short slender stipules (versus without stipules) and flowers with an entire (not trilobulate) epichile.
