Agrostophyllum militare Ormerod -- Orchadian 17(1): 35 (-38; fig.). 2011

Synonyms:
Epiphytic herb. Stems probably caespitose, oval in cross-section, leafy throughout, 19.5-33.5 by 0.09- 0.15 cm thick at the base, 0.20-0.25 cm wide across sheaths. Leaves erect, 0.95-1.2 cm apart, ligulate-lanceolate, 2.1-4.8 by 0.16—0.3 cm; leaf sheaths exposed part 0.7-1.8 cm long, the lobes lanceolate, 0.075-0.275 cm long; apex equally to inequally long-bicuspidate, the lobes 0.05-0.35 cm long. Inflorescence terminal, with several bracts and sheaths, 1-1.5 by 0.5-0.8 cm. Pedicel and ovary slightly compressed, 0.5-0.55 cm long. Flowers outside minutely sparsely furfuraceous. Median sepal ovate-lanceolate to elliptic, 0.58-0.6 by 0.275-0.295 cm, 0.58-0.6 by 0.275-0.295 cm; apex subacute; 3-nerved. Lateral sepals obliquely ovate- elliptic, 0.69-0.7 (0.65 cm along midrib) by 0.3-0.31 cm; apex acute; 3-nerved, midrib low keeled. Petals oblong-ligulate; apex subacute to obtuse; 3-nerved, 0.55-0.58 by 0.13-0.185 mm. Lip 3-lobed, 0.65-0.7 cm long; hypochile with broadly rounded lateral lobes, 0.2-2.5 by 0.19-0.195 cm; ligula subquadrate, its apex shortly bidentate, the margins papillose-pubescent; epichile at the base very fleshy, trilobulate, 0.45 by 0.55-0.6 cm, its midlobe transversely oblong to rectangular, 0.1-0.14 by 0.2-0.29 cm, with emarginate apex. Column 0.475- 0.48 cm long (0.4 cm long without anther).

Leaves green; leaf sheaths often without black margin. Flowers white.
Habitat details not recorded. Altitude 850-1350 m.
Malesia (New Guinea).
Papua New Guinea (Chimbu and Morobe Provinces).
Intermedian growing epiphyte.
April, May, July.
Agrostophyllum militare is similar to A. kairoanum Ormerod but the lip epichile midlobe is transversely rectangular (not ovate), the ligula is short-toothed (not long cuspidate) and the the substigmatic appendage is situated i in the lower half of the column (not in the upper half).
