Type: Leiden cult. 20031680 (Harris).

Epiphytic (?) herb. Rhizome and roots not seen. Stem semi-terete, rather laxly 16-leaved, 42.7 by 0.5 cm at the base, 0.8–1.2 cm wide across the leaf sheaths. Leaves obliquely erect, ligulate-lanceolate, 8.0–11.6 by 1.05–1.30 cm; leaf sheaths smooth, exposed part 2–4 cm long; stipule obliquely deltate, 0.05–0.1 cm long; apex minutely obtusely bilobed, apiculate. Inflorescence terminal, dense, composed of many bracts, sheaths and flowers, c. 1.5 by 2.5 cm; peduncle c. 1 cm long. Pedicel and ovary clavate, 0.5 cm long. Median sepal ovate-elliptic, 0.58 by 0.275 cm; midnerve in apical third narrowly keeled; apex acute; 5-nerved. Lateral sepals obliquely ovate-lanceolate, c. 0.66 by 0.28 cm (0.62 cm long along midnerve); midnerve narrowly keeled throughout; apex acute; 5-nerved. Petals obliquely ovate-lanceolate, 0.53 by 0.23 cm; apex subacute; 5-nerved. Lip 3-lobed, 0.62 cm long; hypochile subglobose (viewed above), shallowly saccate, c. 0.25 by 0.1 cm, c. 0.2 cm wide; ligula thick and fleshy, with bidentate apex; epichile reniform-cordate, with subacute apex, c. 0.37 by 0.5 cm. Column semi-terete, apex with obliquely subquadrate wings, 0.4–0.41 cm long. Fig. 2.


Leaf sheaths with a narrow black margin to 0.08 cm wide. Sepals cream-coloured. Petals white. Lip white with narrowly oblong purple marks on the basal half of the epichile. Column white; tips of stelidia and lower margins of stigma purple; anther pale brownish.

Tropical lowland rainforest, with moderately open to exposed canopy, soil thin, organic, rich alluvium derived from Mt. Bosavi volcano. Altitude 250 m.

Malesia, New Guinea, endemic.

Agrostophyllum libanoanum is similar to A. crassicaule Schltr. but differs in having narrower leaves, petals that are only slightly constricted or drawn out in the upper half, and a shallowly saccate lip hypochile.
