Appendicula hooglandii Ormerod, Checkl. Papuasian Orch. (2017) 25, 463 (fig.).

Type: Hoogland 9190 (holo US; iso CANB, L, LAE).

Epiphytes. Rhizome short. Roots terete, slender, pubescent, 0.03-0.05 cm thick. Stems caespitose, terete, leafy throughout, to 34.5 by c.0.2 cm. Leaves oblong-lanceolate, 2.8-3.4 by 0.7-0.82 cm; leaf sheaths tubular, with a 0.2 cm deep gap opposite the leaf lamina; upper margins minutely irregularly dentate; apex 3-dentate. lnflorescences pseudoterminal and axillary, unbranched or with 1 branch, 2.8-4.6 cm long; peduncle to 3.5 cm long, covered by lanceolate, subfoliose sheaths; rachis 1.2-1.5 cm long, branch 0.8-1.5 cm long; floral bracts ovate-lanceolate, reflexed, 0.2-0.4 cm long, with acute apex, 3-nerved. Flowers many, dense, opening in succession. Pedicel and ovary club-shaped, c. 0.3 cm long. Median sepal oblong-elliptic, concave, 0.275 by 0.13 cm; midnerve thickened toward apex; 3-nerved; apex obtuse. Lateral sepals obliquely ovate, 0.26 (along upper margin) or 0.38 (along lower margin) cm long; apex subacute; midnerve keeled; 3 nerved; mentum obtuse-subtruncate, ellipsoid, 0.12-0.13 by c. 0.13 cm. Petals oblong, 0.2 by 0.075-0.09 cm; 1-nerved; apex obtuse. Lip elliptic-rhombic, 0.375 by 0.275 cm; keels only on hypochile, diverging, triangular in profile; apex obtuse with a small subacute mucro; 5-nerved. Column semiterete, c.0.095 cm long; column foot 0.195 cm long. (After Ormerod, 2017).


Flowers when young with a pale yellow ovary, purple at apex, tepals bright yellow, when old the flowers have a green ovary with purplish ridges, and yellow green tepals.

Epiphyte in oak forest. Altitude 1480 m.

Appendicula hooglandii is similar to A. lutea in habit, petal- and mentum shape and the position of the callus on the lip, but differs the larger leaves (2.8-3.4 by 0.7-0.82 versus 1.5-2.5 by 0.35-0.6 cm), axillary and pseudoterminal inflorescences (versus only pseudoterminal), an oblong-elliptic median sepal (versus broadly ovate), an ovate lip lamina (versus elliptic), and a distinct rostellum with lanceolate lobes (versus rostellum abbreviated).
