Bulbophyllum schizodon

Bulbophyllum schizodon J.J.Verm., Schuit. & de Vogel, Males. Orchid J. 21 (2018) 64

Type: Leiden cult. 32235 (leg. Schuiteman, Roelfsema, Mulder & Vogel) (holo L)

Epiphytes. Rhizome 0.3–0.4 cm diam.; rhizome scale leaves not long persistent, disintegrating into few thin fibers and a woolly mass. Pseudobulbs 0.2–0.5 cm apart, (obliquely) erect, ovoid-conical with or without a somewhat narrowed apex, 0.9–1.2 by 0.5–0.8 cm, somewhat elliptic in section, with many longitudinal grooves. Leaf petiole c. 2.1 cm long; blade elliptic, c. 6.2 by 2.6 cm, index 2.3–2.4; apex acute. Inflorescences 8–10 cm long, solitary to few in a fascicle, 1-flowered; peduncle 3.8–5.5 cm long; scale leaves c. 2, the longest 0.32–0.5 cm long; floral bracts 0.5–0.55 cm long. Pedicel and ovary 2.2–4.2 cm long; basal node c. 0.2 cm above the floral bract attachment. Median sepal free, recurved, ovate, 1.45–1.62 by 0.52–0.58 cm, index 2.7–2.8; apex acute; margins entire, glabrous, surface on upper side hirsute in the apical half, otherwise glabrous; rather thick, c. 3-nerved. Lateral sepals as the median, oblique, elliptic-oblong to ovate-oblong, 1.5–2 by 0.48–0.65 cm, index 3.0–3.2, surface on upper side hirsute towards the apex and along the lower margin, except near the base; rather thick, thicker along the lower margin except near the base. Petals porrect, consisting of an ovate-oblong basal part and a slightly widened, elliptic-rhombiform apical part, 0.6–0.66 by 0.15–0.17 cm, index 3.5–4.4; apex obtuse; margins slightly erose, irregularly papillose-ciliolate except along the basal 1/3 of the lip, surface glabrous but on upper side finely papillose towards the apex; thin; 1-nerved. Lip slightly recurved slightly below halfway, consisting of an oblong basal part with inconspicuous, patent, broadly rounded lateral lobes, and a wider, rhombiform apical part; in general 0.52–0.65 by 0.24–0.37 cm, index 1.7–2.2 (without spreading); apex obtuse; margins entire; glabrous, thick; above concave near the base, with 2 distinct, rather narrow, rounded ridges which start at the base, close together, leaving a deep furrow in between, then diverge and run c. parallel to the lip margins, but not close to these, up to the base of the apical part of the lip, where they converge a little and form a flat, low median ridge which divides into 2 low ridges running close together almost to the apex of the lip, apical part of the lip next to these ridges coarsely wrinkled; below with a wide, flat median ridge along the entire length of the lip. Column including stelidia c. 0.48 cm long, stigma obtriangular, with 2 distinct, slightly antrorse, triangular, obtuse teeth just below its base, separated by a deep longitudinal cleft; column foot not widened at the apex; stelidia slightly downwards falcate, ligulate, c. 1.7 mm long, apex obtuse, lower margin at the base with a patent, deltoid, obtuse wing; anther on underside with a wide ridge, front drawn out into a long, thick, oblong, concave, rounded-truncate beak, its surface minutely papillose; pollinia 4, the inner pair slightly shorter than the outer; viscidium present.
(after Vermeulen, Schuiteman & de Vogel 2018)

Median sepal yellowish green, with dark brown-purple spots. Lateral sepals dark brown-purple, the pale green ground colour only visible near the very base. Petals pale green, with dark brown-purple spots aligned along each side of the midnerve; apical part blackish purple. Lip white, but almost entirely covered with purple spots

Bulbophyllum schizodon is most similar to Bulbophyllum arsoanum J.J. Sm., sharing a tooth below the base of the stigma, but differs in the tooth being deeply divided into 2 (versus a single, transverse ridge), the larger petals (0.6–0.66 versus 0.3–0.4 cm long), and the lip which is widest in the apical half (versus widest in the basal half)
